Description: This animation, second in a set of four, depicts blood flow through the congenital heart defect Tetralogy of Fallot, which is characterized by four anatomical abnormalities:

  1. A narrowing of the right ventricular outflow tract.
  2. An aortic valve that is situated above the ventricular septal defect and connects to both the right and the left ventricle.
  3. A hole between the two ventricles of the heart.
  4. A more muscular right ventricle.

Tetralogy of Fallot results in low blood oxygenation due to the mixing of oxygenated and deoxygenated blood in the left ventricle via the ventricular septal defect, as well as the flow of mixed blood from both ventricles through the aorta due to the pulmonary valve flow obstruction.
