Closed Head Injury with Cognitive Deficits
This exhibit illustrates a closed head injury with axon shearing. A color coded illustration of the brain delineates major functional regions with a red circle highlighting the areas of damage. A sudden impact to the head causes the brain to move within the skull, resulting in an axon shearing injury at the cellular level. The varying densities between the grey matter (neurons) and white matter (axons) causes them to accelerate at different speeds and shear at the grey-white matter junction.
