Closed Head Injury with Cognitive Deficits
This exhibit shows the mechanism of a coup-contrecoup brain injury involving a horse kick to the head. The force of the kick causes the head to suddenly hyperflex forward, while the brain shifts backward and strikes the skull interior (coup injury). The head then recoils backward causing the brain to shift forward and strike the opposite skull interior (contrecoup injury). A color coded illustration of the brain delineates its major functional regions and highlights resulting cognitive deficits.
