Deep Vein Thrombosis and Subsequent Fatal Pulmonary Emboli

Thrombosis is present in a deep vein of the left leg. Pieces of this large blood clot break off, becoming emboli, and flow through the common femoral vein to the heart. The emboli are pumped through the heart to the lungs, where they lodge within the pulmonary arteries. This ultimately results in fatal respiratory failure.
