Highlighted in this exhibit are the effects of a traumatic injury on the abdomen and thorax. Internal hemorrhaging and hematomas are present, affecting the biliary tract and kidneys. Both the pancreas and kidneys have atrophied, and the patient is experiencing renal failure.
In the thoracic cavity, bilateral pleural effusions are noted. Ground glass opacities are seen in the lungs, and the lower part of the bilateral lungs has collapsed (patchy bibasilar consolidation). An embolism has become lodged in the pulmonary vein, blocking the alveoli of the left lung. This prevents the necessary gas exchange between the lungs and the bloodstream, causing an insufficient amount of oxygen in the body, known as hypoxia. As a result, hypoxic respiratory failure occurs.
