Aortic and Mitral Valve Replacements

The exhibit demonstrates diastole and systole of a heart with aortic and mitral valve replacements. During diastole, blood flows through the bilateral atria and into the relaxed bilateral ventricles. The mitral valve replacement, located between the left atrium and ventricle, is open, and the aortic valve replacement is closed during diastole to allow blood flow from the atrium into the ventricle. Systole occurs after diastole, and the heart contracts to pump blood out of the ventricles, through the atria, and into the arteries of the cardiovascular system. The aortic valve replacement, located between the left ventricle and atrium, is open, and the mitral valve replacement is closed during systole to allow blood flow from the ventricle through the atrium.
