Stroke Secondary to Bacterial Endocarditis

SKU: C02042

This exhibit depicts the progression of infective bacterial endocarditis to intracerebral bleeding. Endocarditis is an inflammation of the heart’s inner tissues. Bacterial vegetations form on the heart valves and then travels through the bloodstream to the brain as an embolus (a piece of vegetation) or as an infection (bacterial arteritis). The embolus/arteritis reduces blood flow in the brain, resulting in hemorrhaging and stroke. An axial brain MRI reveals intracerebral bleeds forming a large, acute right parietofrontal hematoma.
