Collapsed Lung with Rib Fractures and Surgical Repair

Post-accident and post-operative illustrations of the left thorax are compared in this exhibit. The posterior post-accident condition depicts complex fractures of ribs 5-10, a collapsed lung surrounded by blood and air (hemopneumothorax), lung contusions, and pleural effusion. These injuries required emergent placement of a chest tube. Post-operatively, a lateral view of the thorax shows two ribbon plates transfixing healed rib fractures at ribs 5, 6, and 7.
