This exhibit depicts the sagittal anatomy of a "cupped" optic disc in the eye. The optic disc, also known as the physiological blind spot, is where the retinal nerve fibers bundle together and exit the eye to form the optic nerve. The optic nerve is responsible for transmitting all visual stimuli to the brain for processing. At the center of the optic disc is a depression known as the optic cup. A rise in intraocular pressure restricts blood flow to the nerve fibers of the optic disc. As these fibers begin to die, the support structure of the optic disc weakens, and the optic cup expands under the pressure.
