This exhibit depicts a carotid endarterectomy to remove atherosclerotic plaque from the internal carotid artery. An incision is made over the lateral neck and the carotid artery is exposed. The vagus nerve, ansa cervicalis, and internal jugular vein are dissected away from the artery. A shunt is placed to preserve blood flow around the stenotic region throughout surgery. The artery is then ligated around the shunt. The plaque is carefully removed from the arterial walls, the shunt is removed, and the artery is sutured. The ligation bands are then removed, restoring normal blood flow through the internal carotid artery.
