This exhibit illustrates the anterior insertion of a ventriculostomy catheter into the right brain ventricles. The ventriculostomy catheter is used to drain cerebrospinal fluid from the brain and reduce intracranial pressure. This can be used to relieve patients who have experienced swelling due to trauma or hydrocephalus. First, a hole is drilled in the frontal skull, allowing access to the brain. Then, the catheter is placed through the cerebrum, and into the ventricles to collect cerebrospinal fluid.
