The left wrist has undergone surgery to release the carpal tunnel, the first and the second extensor compartments. An incision is made over the palmar wrist to expose the carpal tunnel, and the palmar aponeurosis and transverse carpal ligament are incised to decompress the median nerve. Next, a second incision is made at the base of the thumb. Via this incision, the first extensor compartment is released. This is commonly referred to as a de Quervain’s tendon release. Finally, the second extensor compartment is released.
