Left Wrist Basal Joint Arthroplasty

SKU: C19022

Illustrated in this exhibit are the steps of a left basal joint arthroplasty. This surgery is performed to alleviate arthritis pain in the thumb, and is also called the “anchovy procedure”. An incision is made over the first carpal metacarpal joint, and the arthritic trapezium is removed from the wrist. Additional incisions are made to harvest a section of the flexor carpi radialis tendon. The tendon graft is secured into the base of the first metacarpal bone, then the remainder of the tendon is rolled into an “anchovy” and secured in the now vacant joint space.
