Normal Left Ear Anatomy vs. Perilymphatic Fistulas

This exhibit compares the normal coronal anatomy of the ear and an ear with perilymphatic fistulas. In a normal ear, the footplate of the stapes is situated within the round window of the cochlear vestibule, and the cochlear membrane of the round window is sealed. Perilymphatic fistulas (tears) of the round and oval windows allow perilymph to leak into the middle ear cavity. Extensive swelling and stenosis can also be seen in the external ear canal.
