Embolism in Retinal Artery Causing Vision Loss

This exhibit demonstrates how an embolus travels from the heart to a branch of the retinal artery and causes vision loss. First, plaque breaks off from the aortic valve and becomes an embolus, ascending through the aorta towards the neck. Next, the embolus travels through the common carotid artery, internal, and ophthalmic artery. Finally, the embolus becomes lodged in a branch of the retinal artery in the back of the eye. This blocks blood flow to the inferior retina, resulting in vision loss.
