Post – Traumatic Brain Edema

SKU: S02171

This exhibit depicts the results of a post-traumatic brain with edema. A reduction in oxygen supply to the brain causes the tissues to swell. Swelling restricts blood supply and further reduces oxygen supply, leading to more swelling. The ventricles are also compressed, impeding the flow of cerebrospinal fluid. As pressure builds within the skull, the brain begins to herniate inferiorly to make more room. The cerebellar tonsils herniate through the foramen magnum, and the temporal lobes herniate below the tentorium cerebelli. These uncal herniations of the temporal lobes compress the midbrain and cause irreversible damage to the respiratory centers of the brain.
