This exhibit depicts the major arteries of the head and neck with the presence of an internal carotid artery aneurysm. An aneurysm occurs when the walls of an artery weaken and bulge outward under the pressure of blood flow, creating blood-filled “balloon” in the vessel wall. This is treated through the surgical placement of a clip at the neck of the aneurysm. The clip prevents blood from entering the aneurysm, reducing the risk of aneurysm rupture.
