This exhibit depicts the surgical mechanism of injury resulting in damage to the trigeminal nerve. A maxillary LeFort I osteotomy and bilateral sagittal split osteotomies of the mandible were performed to correct facial skeletal dysplasia. The maxillary and mandibular bones were adjusted posteriorly and secured with microplates and screws. One of the screws inserted into the left mandible made contact with the inferior alveolar branch of the trigeminal nerve, resulting in nerve damage.
