This exhibit illustrates the pathway of a thromboembolism that travels from the heart to the brain, resulting in a stroke. A mural thrombus forms against the scarred and thinning walls of the left ventricle. A piece of the thrombus, an embolus, breaks off and travels through the aorta and into the left common carotid artery. This leads to the left internal carotid artery, ultimately lodging in the left middle cerebral artery. The thromboembolism obstructs this blood vessel and deprives the brain of blood and oxygen, causing a stroke.
