This exhibit depicts the mechanism of radial nerve injury during the placement of an IV needle. A lateral view of the left wrist and hand shows the superficial branch of the radial nerve and surrounding anatomical structures. An improperly positioned IV needle is placed into the arm and advanced. As the needle advances, the superficial branch of the radial nerve is lacerated with the needle tip. The needle then enters the cephalic vein and is withdrawn, leaving an intravenous catheter in place.
