A frontotempiral craniectomy is performed due to swelling of the brain. A subdural hemorrhage was evacuated from the cranium, and the contused brain was debrided. The bone flap was not replaced, and instead, the dura was closed with DuraGen.

Right Frontotemporal Craniectomy and Evacuation of Subdural Hematoma

This exhibit depicts the surgical steps taken during a right frontotemporal craniectomy and subdural hematoma evacuation. First, an incision is made over the right frontotemporal skull to expose the skull. Next, a bone flap is created and removed to expose the pulseless dura, after which the subdural hematoma is evacuated. The brain is debrided, and due to swelling, DuraGen is placed over the dural surface instead of reattaching the bone flap. Finally, the incision is closed with staples after a drainage tube is inserted into the subgaleal space.
